How to use HTML escape

Convert characters with special meaning in HTML into entity references so they can be represented as text. This is useful for examples and plain-text content in an HTML context. Escaping is context-dependent, and this utility is not a complete sanitizer for untrusted HTML, JavaScript, CSS, or URLs.

01

Paste plain text

Add the text containing HTML-sensitive characters.

02

Escape special characters

Convert ampersands, angle brackets, and quotes into entity references.

03

Copy the escaped output

Use the result in the appropriate plain-text HTML context.

COMMON QUESTIONS

HTML escape: useful answers

Does escaping sanitize an entire HTML document?

No. This utility escapes text. It does not validate elements, URLs, scripts, or other contexts in an HTML document.

Can I escape already escaped text again?

Yes, but it can double-encode entities. Start with the original plain text when you want one level of HTML escaping.
